Berry Street stands for a cause that really hits close to home for me… and unfortunately, even if I was courageous enough to… I’m 5’6 and weigh 50kgs. I understand my physical limitations. I know that there is nothing I can do as an individual to put an END to family violence.
But even if you don’t have the solution, it doesn’t mean you have to be ignore the prevalence of the issue within your own community. So hopefully with the help of all of you we can help a cause bigger than all of us. An injustice that even if it doesn’t affect you, I assure you the unfortunate fact is that someone you know probably has been there and needed help.
Berry Street currently receive over 1000 family violence referrals from the Victorian Police each month. These referrals have more than doubled in the last 3 years. 61% of the women experiencing violence are caring for children.
These numbers shook me.
I feel for the people that have been in abusive relationships for years feeling trapped. I feel for the women who are financially dependent and feel that there is no other way to live.
My heart goes out to the statistic; the one woman on average a week who is murdered by her current or former partner. My heart goes out to that woman’s children. I hope that they are able to heal from that trauma and live a happy healthy life.
But hoping never helped anyone. So here I am… Working in conjunction with Urban Life Photography to bring you ‘Photos for Awareness.’
Photos for Awareness
